Self-Care: It’s Not What You Think It Is

It’s not your imagination. Everybody’s talking about self-care these days.

You can hardly find a lifestyle blog, women’s magazine or academic journal that doesn’t have an article on the topic. And a quick Google search of the term will quickly send you quickly down a digital rabbit hole that’s typical of the internet.

But despite it’s recent surge in “blogability”, the concept of self-care isn’t new.  After all, old school lessons on the importance of exercise, a balanced diet and getting your beauty sleep are all lessons in self-care. But there’s so much more to it.

Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

There are a ton of people in the blogosphere talking about “self-care”. The Life Edit Project is no exception—it’s one of the things we continuously promote and encourage women to do more often and in better ways.

But what the heck is self-care, anyways?

Poking around on the interwebs, I found two definitions that make it plain. According to Psych Central, “self-care is any activity that we do deliberately in order to take care of our mental, emotional, and physical health.” The Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre gets even more basic, describing self-care as the type of care done “for you, by you.”

7 Easy Ways to Fight Overwhelm in the Moment

Life comes at us from all directions, and sometimes, it can just be too much. As we juggle relationships, career, family, and passions, it’s easy to feel like we’re falling behind…or worse: that we were never even on track in the first place. *dramatic wall slide*
In an ideal world, we’d all be great at preventing overwhelm from settling in to begin with. But, alas—we have to start the journey from where we are now.
